How to replace dilapidated shingles

Removing dilapidated roof is difficult. It is a very dangerous task that needs adequate planning, preparation and skill. Roof removal can be an option when the shingles, gutters, and other roofing materials are already heavily damaged that repairing them is already impractical to do. If your budget permits, I suggest you let Toronto Roofing services do the rest. But if you are working on a tight budget and is willing to take on the challenge, then this article should help you most.

Needed tools/materials
  • Ladder/scaffolding
  • Safety harness
  • Rubber shoes
  • Hard cap
  • Gloves
  • Roofing shovel
  • New shingles
Preparation
  • Ready the tools and materials.
  • Put on a safety harness, hard cap, pair of gloves, and a pair of rubber-soled shoes.
  • Position the ladder on a hard plain surface. Make sure the ladder will not slip off the ground when you climb.
Removing
  • Determine which group of shingles to remove or retain. Shingles that are not yet broken can still be reused.
  • Remove the broken shingles using a roofer’s shovel. The teeth end is designed to slide under the shingles.
  • Remove all roofing nails.
  • Carefully throw the damaged shingles off the roof and into a designated area. Make sure no one’s on that area.
Installing new shingles
  • Put the building paper, a black wool-like thin sheet. It should go under the shingles to prevent water or moisture from penetrating under.
  • Start putting the shingles from the lowest level and work your way up.
  • Secure the shingle with a galvanized roofing nail
  • Cover the head of the nails with a roofing cement to prevent corrosion.
  • When all is done, gather all the tools and clean up all the mess.
