How to Assess a Family Lawyer

An experienced Family attorney will help you understand the type of case you have.
The lawyer that you choose must be someone whom you can trust with your information and to make the best decision in your case. However it is very challenging to assess an attorney.
Here are some tips to help you assess a family attorney:

Ask for referrals. In helping you narrow down the options of those skillful, competent and knowledgeable lawyers in your community, asking for referrals from someone you know like friends or other people who have successfully worked with several attorneys is the best option.

Ask for initial interview. Some initial interviews are for free but some are not. Family Lawyers in Toronto offers you free consultation services.

Be prepared for the initial interview with a list of questions. Your list of questions should include the following
  • How many cases like yours was the attorney able to handle in the past?
  • What is his rate of settling cases like the ones you are undergoing?
  • How many open cases does he currently have?
Do not be shy in asking about fees. Remember that this is a business transaction and everything will end up in paying the attorney for his/ her professional services. The earlier you know how much to pay the better.

Call your state bar association to find out if any complaints were filed against the lawyer and if the lawyer has ever been sanctioned by the bar.

Assess the lawyer’s manner and personality. For a smooth and positive outcome of your case it is important to hire someone you are comfortable working with.
